An Introduction to Kumihimo
(The Gathering of Threads)
Using the Maru Dai
This one day workshop will introduce the student to the fundamental techniques needed in the art of braiding or ( the gathering of threads) using the Japanese Maru Dai. Students will begin by learning to prepare the warp, wrapping the loop, attaching the bobbins to the warp, fastening the counterbalance, and make an 8 strand square braid.
Class fee: $75 + $3.75 GST (incl rental of Maru Dai, 2 warping posts, 8 bobbins and 1 counter weight)
Lunch/snacks, tea & coffee - $10.00
Student will supply: 4 skeins Perle Coton DMC #3 - 15m each in length; these skeins may be one colour or any combination you choose.
Other threads may be used after the initial cord is completed, a variety of cords are available for purchase at Studio G or you may bring different weights of cords from your stash.

Learn the basics of creating exciting organic and textural effects to create your own fabric designs. Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of Deconstructive Screen Printing on fabric using simple screens, thickened dyes and their own designs. No experience is necessary but must be willing to have fun.

Print rollers adapted specifically for printing on fabric and paper, precision cut from grannies old rolling pin these flexible, light weight tools allow for endless creative opportunities. Students will experiment with applying a variety of paints to make pattern, off- prints. Motifs can be layered or stand alone, like building blocks of colour. The added visual value will give you the fabric artist an artistic advantage as you create this unique background to quilt and embellish.

The Craft of Composition Workshop

This two day course will focus on composition in a landscape, rather than design. This will enable people who work with fibres to develop the visual vocabulary needed to build their confidence and create works with their own ideas. Such topics as aerial perspective, balance and contrast will be discussed. This language is of lasting benefit to anyone who wants to step outside the box and leave patterns behind.
The instructor will provide the paper and other supplies, as well as notes about definitions of the terms used, and examples of good and bad composition.
Class fee: $155.25 (GST incl), no materials fee for this workshop; lunch/snacks, tea & coffee included

Shiva Sticks - Stencils & Rubbings

Creating original designs each student will cut their own template and design a unique pattern on black Kona cotton. Rubbings can be made by finding interesting textured items around your home. Shiva Artists Paintstik Oil Colour is a real oil paint in solid form. Shimmering Shiva Oil Paintstiks

Shiva Paint sticks at the next level. You will design and cut your unique stencil, which will cover 1 meter of fabric. Shiva will be applied using both tooth and paint brushes. Blending of colours and curved lines will be stressed.

Encaustic & Embellishment on Canvas

Starting with artists canvas and Encaustic paints you will uncover the ancient techniques, dating back to the 5th century BC, when melted beeswax first was combined with resin and pigments. The luminosity, rich surface, and the beauty of the beeswax forming the surface to embroider upon, give the student a colourful choice to create a one-of-a-kind work of art. Using design and colour studies each student will develop their own cutting-edge creation. Waxes, pigments, tools and methods will be discussed along with techniques on how to achieve smooth, textured and scraped surfaces. Embellish with beads and multi coloured threads.
